As part of an architectural competition organised by Archstorming and the organisation “Un Hogar en Tanzania”, the design of a sustainable and economical house for the Jorejick family, a rural Tanzanian family, was called for. The “Transition” project aims to create a place worthy of being called “home” that will mark a transition for the Jorejick family. It aims to provide them with a haven of comfort and stability, after having endured difficult living conditions. The design embraces this idea by exploring different types of transitions: building typology transitions, spatial transitions, energy transitions and generational transitions. These modes of transition are ways of connecting the family to its traditional roots.

TRANSITION, “THE PROCESS OF MOVING FROM ONE STATE TO ANOTHER”, IS PART OF THE IRAQW TRIBE'S ETHOS.

By relying one the preexisting house on the site, the housing template follows 4 phases to minimize resources and facilitate constructability. The stages start with the adaptive reuse of the initial structure, followed by the addition of kitchen and washroom. At the third phase, the targeted iterations provide the addition of bedrooms and living spaces, therefore creating a modularity for future expansion with phase 4

The combination of ventilation shaft and black painted metal help with dehumidification of the cool air, while gutters and canal system on the ground allows rainwater harvesting towards a cistern.
